Honoring The Maiden

Menstrual Education
and Ritual for Menarche

A sacred rite of passage for young people preparing
for menstruation (ages 9-12) and their adult

The space between childhood and adolescence is a threshold. A moment that has been marked, honored, and protected across generations - until recently.

Your young person is approaching one of the most powerful transitions of their life: the shift from child to maiden. And right now, most people walk into that moment unprepared, disconnected from their bodies, and unsure of what is happening to them.

We do it differently.

Honoring the Maiden is a guided, intimate circle where young people and their adults come together to learn, prepare, and ritualize this transition, so it lands as something sacred, not confusing or shameful.

Group Beach Fun

A young person's first experience with their
menstrual cycle sets the tone for:

If this moment is ignored, rushed, or treated as "just biology" she will internalize that.

If it is honored, witnessed, and understood, she becomes grounded in herself.

This is that opportunity.

What Makes This Different?

This is not a one-way lecture.

This is a circle-based, embodied experience led by a pelvic health physical therapist and a sacred space facilitator.

We combine:

  • Evidence-based body literacy

  • Open, age-appropriate education

  • Ritual, symbolism, and meaning-making

  • Honest conversation between young people and their adult

Each circle includes up to 5 young people and their adult, creating a space that is:

  • Intimate

  • Safe

  • Relational

  • Deeply personal

Body Literacy: Understanding their body (not guessing about it)

Your young person will leave this circle knowing what is happening in their body.

They will be taught using a pelvic model, which changes everything.

Instead of abstract explanations, they will:

  • See where their uterus, ovaries, and vagina actually are

  • Understand how their cycle functions physically

  • Learn what is happening during each phase of their cycle

  • Connect what they feel in their body to what is happening anatomically.

This matters.

Because when a young person can see and understand their body, fear disappears and trust begins.

We replace:

"Something is happening to me"

with

"I understand what my body is doing and I can respond to it."

The Gift of Preparation

Most young people are blindsided by their first period.

We refuse to let that happen.

We teach your young person how to recognize the clear, biological signs that menarche is approaching, so they can meet it prepared, not shocked.

They will learn to recognize:

  • Growth changes

  • The role of body fat and why it matters for menstruation

  • Emotional shifts and why they happen

  • The appearance of pubic and underarm hair

  • Vaginal discharge as communication - not something "gross"

This is body literacy in action.

This is how we build young people who are in tune with their bodies, not disconnected from them.

The Truth About Menstrual Blood

We do not reduce this to "you will bleed every month." We reframe it entirely.

Your young person will learn:

  • What menstrual blood actually is (and why it's different from injury blood)

  • What is normal (color, flow, clots, timing)

  • What to expect in their first year of cycling

  • That their first bleed - menarche - is a biological and symbolic transition

They will understand:

  • This is not something to hide.

  • This is not something to fear.

  • This is the blood of life, renewal, and creation.

Living in Rhythm: The Menstrual Cycle as Intelligence

We teach the menstrual cycle as a rhythm, not a problem.

Your young person will learn the four phases of their cycle through:

  • The seasons (spring, summer, fall, winter)

  • The moon cycles (new, waxing, full, waning)

  • Their own lived experience

Instead of fighting these shifts, they learn to work with them.

This is how young people grow into adults who:

  • Don't burn out

  • Don't override their bodies

  • Know when to rest and when to rise

The Ritual Component
(This is what makes it stick)

Information alone doesn't create transformation.

Ritual does.

Throughout the evening, your young person will be:

  • Welcomed into a symbolic "circle of women"

  • Guided to design their own menarche experience

  • Creating tangible ritual items

  • Participating in a closing ceremony that marks this transition

At the same time, you (the adult) will:

  • Reflect on your own menarche experience

  • Identify what you needed and didn't receive

  • Write a letter to your child to open at menarche

  • Get clear on how to support them in a way that actually lands

Then you come back together.

You witness each other.

You speak it out loud.

And that changes everything.

What your young person leaves with:

They do not leave this circle the same.

They leave with:

  • A foundational understanding of their body

  • Language to talk about what they're experiencing

  • Tools to track and anticipate their cycle

  • A sense that their body is intelligent, not inconvenient

  • A small group of young people and adults they feel safe with

  • The experience of being seen, witnessed, and celebrated

And importantly

  • They leave feeling proud of their changing body.

What you leave with:

You leave with:

  • Confidence in how to guide your child

  • Language for conversations that actually matter

  • A deeper connection to your child

  • The opportunity to break generational patterns

Final Truth

You can either let this moment pass quietly,

or you can mark it in a way your child will carry for the rest of their life.

Honoring The Maiden is how you do that.

How many people can I invite to be in my Honoring The Maiden circle?

Each circle is for up to 10 people. Often a host parent/child will invite 4 of their child's friends and their adult. This creates an intimate experience and deepens the friendship bond as the young people move through this life transition together.
